PREFACE

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is nearing its fiftieth anniversary
and has already created a very rich legacy and firmly established
itself as the most prestigious mathematical competition in which a high-school
student could aspire to participate. Apart from the opportunity to tackle interesting
and very challenging mathematical problems, the IMO represents
a great opportunity for high-school students to see how they measure up
against students from the rest of the world. Perhaps even more importantly,
it is an opportunity to make friends and socialize with students who have
similar interests, possibly even to become acquainted with their future colleagues
on this first leg of their journey into the world of professional and
scientific mathematics. Above all, however pleasing or disappointing the final
score may be, preparing for an IMO and participating in one is an adventure
that will undoubtedly linger in one’s memory for the rest of one’s life. It is
to the high-school-aged aspiring mathematician and IMO participant that we
devote this entire book.

for the study of inequalities, a topic now of frequent use at various levels
of mathematical competitions. In this volume we present both classic inequalities
and the more useful inequalities for confronting and solving optimization problems.
An important part of this book deals with geometric inequalities and this
fact makes a big difference with respect to most of the books that deal with this
topic in the mathematical olympiad.

Nuestro proposito ha sido presentar una introduccion a la teoria de  los numeros lo mas completa posible, dentro de los limites que señala un volumen tan breve. Los conceptos basicos se exponen en la primera parte del libro,y a continuacion esta el material mas especializadoen los 3 capitulos finales. Para establecer la semejanzacon el desarrolloque procede de los topicos generales a los estudios mas particulares,hemos tratado de empezar el libro a un ritmo mas lento que el usado posteriormente. Por tanto, las ultimas partes del libro se presentan en forma mas compactay elaborada que las primeras.

Espero les guste, este es uno de los pocos libros que son buenos y estan en español.

Challenges in Geometry - Chirstopher Bradley

This book is written for students who are interested in geometry and number theory,
for those involved in Mathematical Olympiads, and for teachers in universities
and schools. It is more of a geometry book than a book about integers and contains,
among other things, a full account of the properties of triangles and circles normally
associated with an advanced course of Euclidean geometry. The restriction to configurations
in which various lengths are required to have integer values provides a
natural and appealing link between elementary geometry and interesting problems
involving Diophantine equations. Though the content is mostly elementary, some of
the results would appear to be new. The book is not designed for any particular course
of study, but is suitable as additional reading for undergraduates studying these topics,
for students preparing for competitions, and for other mathematically advanced high
school students.
